Based on a novel by Dick King-Smith, author of The Sheep Pig (from which Babe was adapted), the touching and often spectacular The Water Horse: Legend of the Deep ingeniously presumes to explain the truth behind "Nessie," i.e., the Loch Ness Monster. The story, told in present day to a couple of American tourists by a kindly gentleman (Brian Cox) in a pub, begins with a lonely boy, Angus (Alex Etel), pining for his father, who is serving in the Royal Navy during World War II. Angus, along with his sister (Priyanka Xi) and mother (Emily Watson), live on an estate that has been billeted by soldiers in the Scottish Highlands, near Loch Ness. The troop's commander (David Morissey) has an eye for mom, suspicions about a mysterious handyman, Lewis (Ben Chaplin), who is also a war hero, and an absurd contention that the Highlands are the real frontline in the war against Germany.

Into this intriguing drama comes a completely different element, a fantastical creature of Celtic mythology that befriends Angus and is, in fact, the sea-beast who will eventually be known as the Loch Ness Monster. Trying to hide the dinosaur-like fellow, nicknamed Crusoe, Angus enlists Lewis to transfer it to the lake, where boy and serpent have extraordinary adventures together until human stupidity threatens Crusoe's existence. A true family film, there is a lot for adults to like about the grownup story in The Water Horse. Meanwhile, the wistful relationship between Angus and Crusoe--each of whom helps the other move past obstacles toward their individual destinies--will leave children feeling both happy and melancholy in the best possible sense. Directed by Jay Russell (My Dog Skip), The Water Horse is the best of a mini-genre of films about or inspired by old Nessie. --Tom Keogh

2 out of 5 stars I liked it better the first time...   July 2, 2008

This movie was just okay the first time I watched it, when it was called Free Willy. It might be really fun for kids 10 and younger, but the rest of the gang will be bored quickly. If you'd like a good clean movie for the kids to watch then this is a good one. Otherwise, pass...

5 out of 5 stars Magical! A Must For Your Collection.....   June 30, 2008
Highly recommended! This is a sweet, lovely, endearing film with a
fine cast of actors and outstanding special effects. The magical
water horse, Crusoe, will tickle your funny bone and warm your heart.
The scenes involving the dog and the water horse are priceless; the
ending will make your spirit soar. Children as well as adults who
remain young at heart will adore this movie. A must for your fantasy
dvd collection!

4 out of 5 stars Great family film in the tradition of Free Willy and E.T.   June 24, 2008
This is a really good family film. Reminds me a little bit of Free Willy, E.T., and a few other movies rolled up into one. When a young boy finds and egg and raises what hatches from within the egg, all kinds of adventure soon follows leading to the legend of the Loch Ness monster.

4 out of 5 stars Simply delightful   June 23, 2008
THE WATER HORSE happily does not pretend to be anything more than it is. A delightful little fantasy story, with a simple emotional line. It does have the novelty of bending the usual "boy and his dog" type story into a "boy and his sea monster" story. The production keeps things just realistic enough that it has a bit more realism and teeth than the classic Disney family type fare it can be compared to. The effects work for the Water Horse are quite good, and the creature is cute as a hatchling.

I'd missed seeing this in the theater, and some of the sequences, particularly when the Water Horse is grown must have been very striking on the big screen. But they hold up well on a TV screen in the widescreen format, so I won't complain.

I expect to enjoy watching this again, since it does have a nice level of emotional catharsis. I like that it's about joy found in unexpected ways and places.

3 out of 5 stars I want a Water Horse!   June 22, 2008
That's what you'll think everytime the little (then BIG) Dickens is on the screen. When he is not the focus of the story it drifts off into stupidity and BOREDOM. The whole house occupation (in SCOTLAND?) is just so stupid. Maybe if you skip chapters ...
