Amazon.com A daffy, adorable, and very funny celebration of DIY spirit, Be Kind Rewind stars Mos Def (The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy) as Mike, a clerk at a failing video store in a rundown New Jersey neighborhood. When his friend Jerry (Jack Black), who's been magnetized in a power station accident, wipes all of the videotapes blank, the two of them decide to recreate the movies themselves rather than face the store's owner (Danny Glover). The pure charm of Be Kind Rewind can't be captured in that spare plot synopsis. The blend of the movie's great cast (which also includes Mia Farrow, Melonie Diaz of American Son, and Sigourney Weaver) and pitch-perfect writing and direction from writer-director Michel Gondry (director of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, writer-director of The Science of Sleep) culminates in a truly delightful movie--sweet without being saccharine, richly comic without irony or sarcasm (which, given the presence of Black, is surprising), sentimental without losing sight of the hard edges of life. Mos Def turns in a standout performance, deeply sympathetic without a moment of grandstanding. An absolutely winning film. --Bret Fetzer
Product Description Music-video-director-turned-auteur Michel Gondry continues to charm with his low-tech offering BE KIND REWIND. Set in dreary Passaic New Jersey the comedy centers on two of the town's residents: trouble-making Jerry (Jack Black) and well-meaning Mike (Mos Def). Mike works in a video store in an age where the VHS is long dead but the store's owner Mr. Fletcher (Danny Glover) doesn't seem to be in any hurry to change. When Mr. Fletcher leaves town for a trip he entrusts his store to Mike with one piece of advice: don't let Jerry in the store. But after some mischief Jerry returns to the store in a strange state. Not only is he weirder than usual but he's also magnetized which causes the entire store's stock to be erased. In order to keep the struggling business afloat Mike and Jerry begin remaking the films in the store one by one. Their hilariously low-budget versions of films such as GHOSTBUSTERS and RUSH HOUR 2 soon begin to draw attention and business to the store but that creates a whole new set of problems for the pair. Though Gondry's three previous fiction films--HUMAN NATURE ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND and THE SCIENCE OF SLEEP--were all essentially love stories BE KIND REWIND captures another kind of romance. Both the writer-director and his characters are in love with the cinematic medium itself and their devotion shows. BE KIND REWIND doesn't reach the heights of ETERNAL SUNSHINE but it doesn't seem to be aiming for that genius. This is simply a hilarious comedy fun for film fans of all stripes which celebrates the sheer joy of watching and making films.System Requirements:Running Time: 101 minutesFormat: BLU-RAY DISC Genre: COMEDY/BUDDY FILMS Rating: PG-13 UPC: 794043123252 Manufacturer No: 1000040435

Get sweded , get screwed. July 2, 2008 Beware...this is a biased review. I simply cannot be two sided about this film. All talents are capable but of no use on this film.
Albiet the writer's strike of '07 has been over for awhile. However , " Be Kind Rewind " is a reminder. I like Mos Def and Jack Black , respectively. Sadly , they have as much chemistry as tennis shoes and mustard. I was taken aback by the shotty cinetography and bad acting. It felt as though someone had written a generic script and cast everyone that was available for the weekend. Ironic , because the premise of the film is based on the same synopsis. Don't look for any hilarious moments in this lemon. Danny Glover's performance as a video store proprietor is as generic as it gets. Jack Black tries to save some of the film with the comedic skills that launched his career and Mos Def attempts to flesh out his character as well. Too bad it's all for nothing. I haven't a clue why this film recieved the greenlight for production. All I know is that the first act was too long , the second act was mediocre ( at best ) , and the third act was like watching paint dry. I wish I had my 2 hours back. Stay away ! Far , far away !
not as great as i thought July 2, 2008 i did not think this movie was very great. i thought it was very slow going and had no climax.
Movie-Fan's Gold July 1, 2008 The generic plot: a run-down neighborhood video store is going to be forced to close if the owner (Danny Glover) can't come up with $60,000 to upgrade.
Accompanying problem: Jerry (Jack Black) demagnetizes the entire stores VHS tapes.
Solution: Jerry and Mike (Mos Def) shoot low-budget versions of hit films to replace the longer and less-entertaining real versions. This becomes known as 'Sweding.'
Opinion: A very funny movie is the result. The sweded versions of the movies are a riot, and Jerry as Miss Daisy is especially riotous. A couple of the scenes feel like they don't belong, but overall this is an outstanding film for lovers of movies.
If you enjoyed Clerks II, you should enjoy this.
it was ok, could have been better though July 1, 2008 Jack Black and Mos Def star in this interesting but poorly developed story of a video store that is declining in sales. This is majorly due to VHS; it's obsolete and has been replaced by DVD. Danny Glover is the owner of the shop, mos def is one of the employees, and Jack Black...well..I really don't know, he's a friend that pops up every now and then to make a quick funny line.
The premise of the movie is good, the idea is original, but the development isn't. Most of what you see in the trailer and tv previews is what pretty much sums up the whole film; All the funny lines in the trailer are the ones in the movie. Better say it's as if the trailer spoiled the whole movie. Now there are some funny lines here and there, but they serve no more than a smirk and a tiny laugh. As for the movies they do, they are funny but they get tiresome after a while, as if they are pushing the envelope to much. It is worth to rent and watch once, but not to own.
MY PERSONAL RATING: 3 OUT OF 5
not THAT bad July 1, 2008 I did not have high hopes for this movie, especially after Nacho Libre. But this movie is very unny and sweet. Mos Def was the stand out in this one and was really wonderful.
