Amazon.com You won't need a bottle of rum to enjoy Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, especially if you've experienced the Disneyland theme-park ride that inspired it. There's a galleon's worth of fun in watching Johnny Depp's androgynous performance as Captain Jack Sparrow, a roguish pirate who could pass for the illegitimate spawn of rockers Keith Richards and Chrissie Hynde. Depp gets all the good lines and steals the show, recruiting Orlando Bloom (a blacksmith and expert swordsman) and Keira Knightley (a lovely governor's daughter) on an adventurous quest to recapture the notorious Black Pearl, a ghost ship commandeered by Jack's nemesis Capt. Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush), a mutineer desperate to reverse the curse that left him and his (literally) skeleton crew in a state of eternal, undead damnation. Director Gore Verbinski (The Ring) repeats the redundant mayhem that marred his debut film Mouse Hunt, but with the writers of Shrek he's made Pirates into a special-effects thrill-ride that plays like a Halloween party on the open seas. Aye, matey, we've come a long way since Jason and the Argonauts! --Jeff Shannon

Reference Quality Video and Audio, Great Film May 22, 2008 Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean is an excellent film. I cannot say I am a fan of all the films in the Pirates series, but this is a good one. I don't get Johnny Depp's character too much.
This film has great scenery - the film was shot in Dominica.
A great movie,. April 21, 2008 Of course you have to be a Johnny Depp fan to enjoy this movie.I have all three and its never ending to sit back and watch it over and over. Get it
Comes alive on Blu-Ray April 3, 2008 Whilst I thoroughly enjoyed the standard definition of this DVD, having watched it on Blu-Ray, it comes to life. Johnny Depp at his flamboyant best. Will watch again and again and.......... Brilliant.
Great movie but a little on the slow side to load. March 16, 2008 My hats off to the creators of The Pirates of the Caribbean movies. The movies combine all elements of entertainment to bring the viewer an excellent movie experience. There is action, comedy, romance and yes horror. All of which make these movies a well worth investment. I say investment because Blu-ray movies are pretty expensive but well worth it overall. This movie takes a while to load (2 minutes and 51.43 seconds) to be exact from pushing the on button to seeing the first actual picture (The Walt Disney Logo) on a Sony BDP-S300 Blu-ray player with firmware version 3.80. Once loaded there are about 8 unessessary previews which can be skipped over by pressing the track forward button 8 times. Anyways if you can get beyond these minor glitches you will definitely enjoy watching this movie.
Great Movie, Great HD Transfer. March 4, 2008 For those who gave the Bluray movie one star because of framing issues are lame. The Bluray version has top notch HD picture and sound like all of Disney's Bluray releases. So what if a scene in the movie has the actors heads cut off. I barely even noticed it and wouldn't have noticed it unless someone pointed it out to me. 5 stars all the way. The original POTC is by far the best movie in the trilogy and even better on Bluray.
